I have individual health insurance with no maternity coverage. Will I be covered immediately with group?
Gieney02 asked:
I currently have an individual health insurance plan. I chose not to pay for maternity coverage. When my husband starts a new job next year, I will be on his group health insurance plan and will get maternity coverage. Here is my question… will there be a waiting period before I can get pregnant/receive maternity benefits after I get on his plan?
I know that if I added added maternity to my individual plan, I wouldn't have maternity coverage for 9 months. I'm hoping it's different with a group plan.
I'm hoping to be able to get pregnant shortly after I get on his plan so I'm hoping there's no waiting period. I know all insurance companies are different, but if anyone can give me any insight on this, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

I know for my job short term disability took 1 year from when I started.
It is different for each insurance plan, your husband will just have to ask his new job how their insurance plan works. There usually are probation periods when starting a new job. If it takes longer than you want to wait you can be covered through M.A. for everything related to pregnancy, no matter what your situation is or how much your household income is. A friend of mine was covered through M.A. during her pregnancy and she was really suprised to find out there are no limits to who they will cover. It was something that I was worried about for the future when my husband is no longer in the military and we won't be covered through them anymore.
There is no way to know for certain as some groups add limitations to maternity coverage in order to keep insurance premiums down. Since your husband doesn't have the job yet, you might just have to wing it. Most group coverage by major employers would automatically cover existing conditions after 30, 60 or 90 days and some have no restrictions at all.
there are too many different types of plans to know exactly, but i do know this situation:
employee sponsored group health plans (that do not carve out pregnancy) can not pre-exist pregnancy under Federal Law. so, if you go to an EGHP and the medical is all bundled under one plan, you are ok. If it's carved out or if it has less than 10 employees or if it is a self - pay plan (not a group plan) then you need to check -and obviously check anyway. you can contact HR for the benefits administrator and just call and ask. I work for an insurance company and people call all the time with this type of question.
